This story was originally published on my vet school blog, “Wet Cleanup on Aisle 5.”
A mere three weeks stand between me and my first day of vet school. I imagine, perhaps incorrectly, that the majority of my classmates are in “I’m so excited for vet school!” mode. That is, thinking about classes, buying new shoes, and generally having vet school on the brain. I should be too, but I’m not.
Instead, I am in freak out mode. I’m not freaking out about starting vet school, though–I’m freaking out about how much crap I have to do between now and then. Vet school is the furthest thing from my mind.
Here’s a sampling of the list:
- get the house re-roofed
- paint a bedroom, a bathroom, and three pieces of furniture
- attempt to finish off four continuing ed classes (not gonna happen, but I can dream)
- schedule 6 different social outings with people I won’t be seeing much in the next four years
- design two websites
- design a headstone for my grandmother’s grave
- buy a baby shower gift
- mend three pairs of the other half’s pants that have been languishing for months
- clean the house, before it gathers four years’ worth of dust
- buy cat food
- and so on and so on…
Even if I weren’t working full time, I don’t think I’d be able to finish it all. As it is, well… *sigh*
Where did my summer go? Can’t we postpone this vet school thing another month?
Congratulations on getting in=) thats the hardest bit right;)
Dont freek out, enjoy ur free summer before it starts. I know how you feel, i felt this way last summer before i started vet school and i promise you~ everything will work itself out=)
Think about all the fun ull be having, and all the exciting relevant vet stuff ur going to learn=) Best of wishes
Ah-ha! So YOU’RE the 35 year old they let in while I got to rot on the sidelines for another year. But really, in all seriousness, good for you! I cannot begin to tell you how nice it is to find a kindred spirit. I happened to accidentally stumble onto your blog today while surfing to clear my head from trying to make up my mind as to whether or not to reapply this go round… I’m 36 with a grad degree and a full time job; and have been barking up the tree for a long time now. I’ve recently been offered two marvelous positions – both of which would allow me possibilities beyond my wildest dreams. However, I just don’t think they’ll make me as happy as a veterinary degree. Long story short, you’ve given me hope and a reason to think some more. Thank you!
Now, don’t try to build Rome in a day – been there, done that and it’s not healthy. Instead, take the time to do what matters – see your friends and spend time with ‘the other 1/2’ who, I’m sure, can take care of things like the roof and help with the dusting while you’re in school.
Best of luck to you and perhaps I’ll meet you next fall.
If it makes you feel any better, there are at least two 50+ year-olds in my class, which means you are just a youngster. 🙂 I’ll see you next year!
